The Board of Directors of the International Association of Lions Clubs has chosen Hamburg as the host city for the 96th Annual International Convention. That means some 25 000 Lions from all over the world will now be coming for the convention from 5 to 9 July 2013, to be held at the CCH, the Hamburg Trade Fair and the Color Line Arena.

“I am delighted that the Lions have chosen Hamburg,” said Hamburg’s Mayor Ole von Beust, “and I know they will get a very warm welcome here. The promotion of international relations and understanding between peoples are prime concerns of all Lions – and that is a perfect fit with the city of Hamburg, a growing city which is well known as the ‘Gateway to the World’”. Bernd Aufderheide, Chairman of the Management Board of HMC (Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH), added that “It was thanks to the wholehearted support of the Mayor and the City of Hamburg that we were able to win the Convention in competition with attractive rivals such as Montreal and Honolulu. I am particularly pleased that Hamburg will have the honour of being the first German city to host the Lions’ International Convention.”

In the 91 years of history of the Lions Clubs International, founded in 1917, Hamburg is only the third European city to host an international convention, following Nice in 1978 and Birmingham in 1989. “I am still overcome with emotion. We have a really big task ahead of us now,” said Lions Past District Governor Barbara Grewe, whose Multiple District 111 will be organising the five-day convention together with Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH.

“I am convinced that the Lions will feel very much at home in our beautiful city, and in particular at our venues. We will do all we can to make sure they do,” promised HMC Chairman Bernd Aufderheide. He estimates that the hotels of the city can expect additional business of up to 200 000 bed-nights as a result of the convention.

The host cities for the International Convention of Lions Clubs International will be Bangkok (Thailand) in 2008, Minneapolis (USA) in 2009, Sydney (Australia) in 2010, Seattle (USA) in 2011, and Busan (South Korea) in 2012.
