Adelaide Convention Centre is gearing up to grab a share of the growing Chinese visitor market to Australia, estimated at about $3 billion a year.

Hot on the heels of Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s signing of a Tourism Memorandum of Understanding with China during her visit to the country this week, the Convention Centre is launching the first full Chinese language website of any Australian convention centre.

The ACC is the only convention centre in Australia to offer its entire website in Chinese, which the Centre’s Chief Executive Alec Gilbert said was evidence of its commitment to attracting business from Australia’s largest trading partner.

The launch follows Adelaide Convention Centre’s recently announced partnership with Suntec International in Singapore – an additional move to strengthen its ability to attract Asian business and professional conferences.

“Our strategic targeting of the Chinese market is not just based on building business for the Adelaide Convention Centre,” Mr Gilbert said. “Every convention attendee also spends money while they are in South Australia, stimulating a significant economic multiplier for the State. In the case of China, we also believe that familiarisation with our State and its wider economic activities among Chinese business leaders has the potential to attract significant interest and investment in South Australia.”

Mr Gilbert said a growing number of direct flights from Asia to Adelaide had also allowed for better access to South Australia.
