ICC DURBAN BAGS 2 MAJOR INTERNATIONAL EVENTS FOR 2013

The ICC Durban was yet again placed on the global forefront when it was awarded the World Congress of the World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine 2013. This event will attract over 10 000 delegates from the international medical fraternity, ensuring an estimated economic impact of to the local economy of approximately 400 million rand. The magnitude of the event will ensure that most hotels, restaurants and local businesses will benefit from this event. Most importantly though destination Durban can be showcased to the international community through conference tours.

The second major event was awarded to the ICC in Beijing on Saturday, 15th August 2009. The World Soy Bean Research Conference will be hosted in 2013. This conference will attract between 1500 to 2000 delegates. The city of Durban pipped its nearest competitor Atlanta Georgia to secure this major event. CEO, of ICC Durban Miller Matola said it is because the city of Durban has played an instrumental role in soy bean research, city representatives also formed part of the bid team.

This has been a huge feat for the ICC Durban especially over the recent rebate furore which was misconstrued by many as the ICC requesting an income grant.

Matola went on to say that it is because of the major international events that the ICC Durban has been winning and hosting in the past few years that we are in a position to turn down the city subsidy of R20million in both the previous and current fiscal.

Despite the economic downturn and the effect on the conference industry globally, the ICC and the city of Durban remains attractive to hosting international events said Matola.
